[Allentown, PA, October 30, 2023]: Over 60 students representing Harrison-Morton, Raub, South Mountain and Trexler Middle Schools will compete dancing salsa and merengue in front of a panel of judges. The Allentown School District Foundation's Middle School Latin Dance competition will be held on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at 7:00 pm in the McHugh Auditorium at William Allen High School (WAHS). It will be a lively, exciting, upbeat event.
Created in 2011 as a Teacher Innovation Grant project proposed by then Trexler Middle School teacher Irene Blough, the program is in its 11th year. The Latin Dance lessons and competition provide a healthy and fun activity that builds skills, teaches teamwork, instills confidence, and celebrates the Hispanic heritage of many Allentown School District students.
Dance instructors Eric Bass and Mercedes Van Aken have visited each school weekly since mid-September to teach the dances, while in-school coaches work with the students to practice and perfect their dances. Rehearsals at WAHS on the big stage are supported by the student stage crew directed by Mr. Marc Hissam.
The community is invited to attend this showcase event. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students with ID at the door. The program is sponsored by Highmark and receives funding from businesses contributing through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program and individual ASD Foundation donors.
