Bill Wood Track Scholarship

Thanks to Mrs. Bobbie Wood, the ASD Foundation will be awarding a new scholarship this year. Mrs. Wood established this award in memory of her husband, Bill Wood, a long-time track and assistant football coach at Louis E. Dieruff High School.

At the time of Mr. Wood’s passing in 2020, Keith Groller wrote “As a Dieruff assistant and teacher for 30 years, Wood became part of the fabric of the east Allentown school, bringing toughness to countless Husky athletes,” (Groller, 6/2/20, The Morning Call). Julie Ambrose, Executive Director of the Allentown School District Foundation says, “The Allentown School District Foundation is pleased to honor Mr. Wood’s memory and contributions to Dieruff High School by facilitating this scholarship. We thank Mrs. Wood for her generous gift.”

AN EXPENDABLE SCHOLARSHIP
These $500 scholarships are being funded through an initial gift of $1000 with a commitment to fund the scholarship for at least three years beginning in 2021. The eligible recipients will be a male and female graduating senior who have demonstrated leadership on the DHS track team and expressed an interest in participating in college-level track. The students will be selected by a process determined by the principal of Louis E. Dieruff High School.

The Senior Scholarship program was founded in 2013 and has grown to offer annually more than 60 scholarships every year to students of William Allen High School, Louis E. Dieruff High School and Building 21. Both expendable and endowed scholarships are managed by a professional fund manager and supervised by the ASDF Investment Committee.
