William Allen HS Class of 1970 Establishes Endowed Scholarship
Posted on 09/01/2022

September 1, 2022, Allentown, PA – After a two-year Covid delay, members of the William Allen High School (WAHS) Class of 1970 celebrated their 50-year class reunion and marked the occasion by establishing an endowed scholarship. Prior to the reunion, class members toured their alma mater and learned how the school has changed over time. Scholarship coordinator Mr. Christopher Yeager expressed gratitude for his classmates, "We are extremely glad we were able to do this. Our visit with Mr. Corey Cowen at Allen influenced many in our class to give. We were so impressed by his knowledge of student needs. He stressed the importance of first generation, post-secondary students."

With the help of Ms. Betsy Emery-Nonnemacher, also a WAHS graduate, the William Allen Canary attended the class reunion which further encouraged members to participate in the scholarship fundraiser.

An Endowed Scholarship

The William Allen High School Class of 1970 Scholarship was created with an initial gift of $12,375 raised by members of the class of 1970. Beginning in 2024, and each year thereafter, this scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who has made a significant contribution to WAHS by active participation in school activities and who will become a first-generation post-secondary school graduate.

Endowed scholarships are managed by a professional fund manager and both expendable and endowed scholarships are supervised by the Allentown School District Foundation (ASDF) Investment Committee. The principal of an endowed scholarship remains invested, and the scholarship amount is based on the fund's earnings. The Senior Scholarship program was founded in 2013 and has grown to offer more than 60 scholarships a year to students at William Allen High School, Louis E. Dieruff High School and Building 21. In 2022, the ASDF awarded over $63,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors.
