ASD Foundation Announces Two New Scholarships

ASD Foundation Announces Two New Scholarships
Posted on 01/17/2023
Allentown, PA  (January 13, 2023) – This June two additional graduates of William Allen High School (WAHS) will receive scholarships through the newly created the Anne and Ed Davis Scholarship. The Robert and Linda Ashbrook Memorial Scholarship, also recently created, will be awarded beginning in 2024. Both were established through gifts to the ASD Foundation in December 2022.

Scholarships reduce the financial burden of going on for further education, sometimes making the decision to go to college possible. Jena LaTorres, 2022 scholarship recipient attending Kutztown University stated, "Receiving a scholarship from the Foundation showed me that the Allentown School District cares about my success. And the money helps a lot."

Mr. and Mrs. Ed and Anne Davis, long-time educators and supporters of education in the Lehigh Valley, established this named scholarship. Anne is also a 1959 graduate of Allentown High School. These two $500 scholarships will be awarded to a student who will enroll at Muhlenberg College and a student who will enroll at either Kutztown University or East Stroudsburg University after graduation. Students will be selected by a process determined by the principal.

The Robert and Linda Ashbrook Memorial Scholarship is an endowed scholarship created by the Ashbrook Family Foundation (AFF). This award is in memory of Robert and Linda Ashbrook, who were longtime residents of Allentown, PA, and is intended to give back to the community and to the school district that educated their sons. Beginning in 2024, this scholarship will be awarded to a graduate from Louis E. Dieruff and William Allen High Schools in alternate years. The recipient will be pursuing post-high school education and will be selected by a process determined by the principal.

Endowed scholarships are managed by a professional fund manager and both expendable and endowed scholarships are supervised by the Allentown School District Foundation (ASDF) Investment Committee. The principal of an endowed scholarship remains invested, and the scholarship amount is based on the fund's earnings. The Senior Scholarship program was founded in 2013 and has grown to offer more than 60 scholarships a year to students at William Allen High School, Louis E. Dieruff High School and Building 21. In 2022, the ASDF awarded over $63,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors. Students should visit their guidance office at William Allen, Louis E. Dieruff or Building 21 high school to learn how to apply for scholarships awarded through the ASD Foundation.
