Scholarships Awarded to 57 ASD Graduates This Year
Posted on 08/24/2021
August 23, 2021, Allentown, PA – In June 2021, the Allentown School District Foundation (ASDF) awarded senior scholarships to 57 graduating students from William Allen High School, Louis E. Dieruff High School, and Building 21 High School. This is the seventh year that graduating students were awarded senior scholarships through the Foundation. In addition, many scholarships are also awarded directly by the high schools. A total $54,804 was distributed to graduating seniors; while alumni from the classes of 2018, 2019 and 2020 continue to receive their Roland & Louise Neuweiler Wotring awards bringing the total scholarships through the ASDF to $110,488. The endowed and expendable scholarships awarded by the Foundation are made possible by generous donors looking to recognize student achievement and to memorialize individuals who have contributed to the school district and the Allentown community in numerous ways. Selection of the students is carried out by each high school guidance team.

RECENT NEW SCHOLARSHIPS

ASDF Board President Daniel Bosket states, “We are humbled by these generous community gifts, and we are dedicated to distributing them to deserving students in the Allentown School District.” The guidance departments from Dieruff and Allen high schools led car caravans to deliver the awards to students at their homes. Alumni and ASDF representatives participated in the celebration. These are our latest scholarships.

Bill Wood Memorial

The Bill Wood Track Scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Bill Wood by his wife, Bobbie Wood. Mr. Wood was a long-time Dieruff High School teacher, head track coach and assistant football coach. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide assistance to Dieruff track athletes aspiring to participate in college track. This $500 award will be awarded annually to one male and one female student.

“Bobbie is so committed to Dieruff and these scholarships that she came back from down the shore to participate in the scholarship caravan for both her students,” says Richard L. Button, chair of the ASDF Scholarship Committee and a past president of the ASD Foundation.

Jon and Jolene Hammer Family

The Hammer Family Scholarship was created this year to provide financial assistance to a William Allen High School graduating senior who might otherwise not be able to attend a four-year college or university. Created by Jon, a 1987 graduate of William Allen High School, and his wife, Jolene Hammer, this scholarship is given to a deserving student with preference for a student who will attend St. Joseph’s University or Arcadia University.
