Two New Scholarships for ASD Students Honor Well-Known Morning Call Reporters
Posted on 08/20/2019
Two new senior scholarships have been established in honor of Morning Call sports reporters and Allentown School District alumni Paul Reinhard and Keith Groller. The funds will provide two $500 expendable scholarships each year for at least four years, one for a graduating senior from William Allen High School and one for a graduating senior from Dieruff High School. The scholarship requires that have expressed an interest in a journalism career or have made a significant contribution to their high school newspaper.

The drive to raise the scholarship funds was coordinated by Terry German, a retired Dieruff High School basketball coach, from a group of ASD alumni. The Foundation will begin awarding the Keith Groller Scholarship and the Paul Reinhard Scholarship with next year’s graduations in June 2020. The new scholarships will add to the growing number of scholarships the Foundation administers to expand opportunities for graduating ASD students.

Reinhard, an Allentown High School alumnus, Class of 1958, is a former sports editor and columnist for The Morning Call. He still contributes to the paper as a freelance sports writer. He was employed by The Morning Call for 43 years, making his mark at the Indianapolis 500, which he covered 31 years in a row. He also saw two L.V. athletes win medals at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. In high school, he was a member of the unbeaten (9-0-1) 1957 AHS football team.  Reinhard’s years as a secondary and a postsecondary Lehigh Valley student are reflected in the interest he has always brought to his journalism on area athletics. After finishing school in the ASD, Reinhard graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Moravian College.

Groller, a Dieruff High School graduate, Class of 1979, has been a reporter and editor with The Morning Call for 39 years in a career in sports writing that began when he was hired by Reinhard. Groller’s coverage has included national sports organizations (the Philadelphia Eagles, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Philadelphia 76ers, and NASCAR at Pocono Raceway). The former Husky reporter most enjoys covering local sports, where, in addition to Lehigh University football, he is able to focus his attention on high school football, basketball, and softball. He studied at The Pennsylvania State University and graduated from Kutztown University.

“We are still open to receiving gifts to honor these gentlemen with these scholarships,” says Richard L. Button, current ASD Foundation Scholarship Committee Chair and a former president of the ASD Foundation. If you would like to contribute to these scholarship funds, please make your check payable to the Allentown School District Foundation and send it to the attention of Vicki Newhard, P.O. Box 328, 31 South Penn Street, Allentown, PA, 18102. Please specify Groller/Dieruff or Reinhard/Allen.
